Martha passed away on her 82nd birthday, May 17, 2023. Martha received a BA and two MAs from the University of Chicago and worked there as a lecturer/counselor in her 20s. In her 50s, she pursued her love of psychology, graduating from the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland and then completing a PhD in clinical psychology at Rutgers University in 2004. Martha worked in government care settings and then private practice, specializing in individual and couples’ therapy. She retired in 2019 in Dayton, Ohio.
With great sadness and heavy hearts, Makarand’s family shares that he passed away on July 6, 2023. He will be remembered for his incredible zest for life, spirited personality, and love and compassion for family and friends. Says his widow, Shilpa, “He always said to me Kellogg changed his life. He learned so much and made wonderful friends and great connections.” Makarand ran his first marathon with Kellogg classmates in Chicago in 2010 and came back 11 years later to run it again. He always loved Northwestern’s signature purple, Shilpa says, adding that “his career soared to new heights thanks to his Kellogg degree and learnings and network.” Makarand is also survived by his sons, Shardul and Manas; his mother, Anupama; and his brother, Abhijeet.
Joe was a professor of finance from 1975 through 1986. He maintained his strong ties to Kellogg, teaching here and holding various appointments for the next three decades. His academic interests included financial economics, economic history, transportation cost and performance, and auction markets.
