Kellogg Cares Day expands its reach

A long-standing tradition at Kellogg and a highlight of the year, Kellogg Cares Day embodies the spirit of empathetic leadership as Kellogg community members partner with local nonprofits throughout Evanston and Chicagoland for a day of civic engagement.

In October, for the second year in a row, the Kellogg Alumni Council and the alumni club network hosted their own Kellogg Cares Day events, uniting alumni volunteers and making a meaningful impact in cities across the United States and around the globe.

This year, the event expanded from five cities to 14, with alumni volunteers doing everything from packaging fresh meals to building healthy play environments to cleaning up trash from our oceans and neighborhoods.

Zell Family Foundation creates landmark endowment for entrepreneurial program

Kellogg received a landmark $25 million gift from the Zell Family Foundation. Combined with past foundational gifts from the late real estate entrepreneur Sam Zell, the new gift will provide an endowment for the successful Zell Fellows Program.

Launched in 2013, the Zell Fellows Program provides an entrepreneurial experience for selected Kellogg MBA candidates interested in starting a new venture or acquiring an existing one. Zell Fellows are selected in the beginning of their second year on the basis of their ambition, drive and desire to be part of a cohort of like-minded entrepreneurs.

Prior to his passing in May 2023, Sam Zell expressed a desire to honor the Zell Fellows Program’s 10th anniversary and create a permanent home for the program at Kellogg. The foundation’s gift cements the school’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurs for generations to come.

“With Sam’s passing, we lost a visionary entrepreneurial leader and a dedicated champion of our school and students,” Kellogg Dean Francesca Cornelli says. “The best way to honor Sam’s memory is to continue improving the Zell Fellows Program, which has made, and will continue to make, the aspirations of some of our incredibly creative students possible. Sam was so proud of them and always enjoyed meeting and talking to them. He wanted this gift to ensure the program continues to shape and inspire entrepreneurs and innovators who will have meaningful impact around the world, as Sam did.”

Super Bowl Ad Review celebrates 20th anniversary

Students and faculty gathered for the school's annual tradition of analyzing the biggest ads of the year during the Super Bowl as brands compete to capture the attention of millions of viewers.

Marketing professors Tim Calkins and Derek Rucker, both Super Bowl ad experts, have led the popular discussion for two decades. “It has been amazing to watch how the creative, advertising and tonality in messaging have changed over the years,” says Calkins.

For Rucker, it’s exciting to see how brands will approach messaging and campaign strategy every year. “One of the wonderful things about how we think about strategy at Kellogg is we use basic principles from psychology, economics and sociology that build our ad assessment framework,” he explains. “The framework allows us to very quickly think about an ad and identify its strengths and its weaknesses.”

Head to Kellogg’s YouTube channel to watch Calkins and Rucker revisit some of the most iconic Super Bowl ads, and hear from alumni who have led successful Super Bowl ad campaigns for M&Ms and Google.
